ELEMENTS - Rita Winiger
EXHIBITION 10 - 30 November 2025
Rita Winiger was born in Zurich, Switzerland but has called Australia home for over 40 years. She has lived in Armidale for 15 years. After studying ceramics earlier in her art career, Rita now focuses on painting.
Rita’s abstract landscapes explore the emotional tension of belonging to two homelands. Working across canvas, paper, and board, they use layers of acrylic, charcoal, and crayon to evoke shifting terrains that feel both distant and familiar. Painterly marks—sometimes gestural and fluid, sometimes raw and fragmented—suggest movement, memory, and displacement. Through this tactile interplay of media and mark-making, the works become meditations on identity, rootedness, and the fragmented experience of home.
‘Elements’ is Rita Winiger’s second solo show at Weswal Gallery.
Window to Another World, Acrylic on board, crayons & charcoal, 40cm x 50cm
“For three years, I longed to return to Switzerland but was unable to travel due to a family illness. From Australia—divided by an ocean—I often imagined being somewhere else.
These paintings blend elements of both places: the vast Australian sea and the Swiss mountains that filled my thoughts. The windows represent openings to another world, a reflection of homesickness and longing.
After three years, I finally returned to Switzerland. The distance made my connection to its landscape—and my yearning for it—even stronger.
