Julia Griffin is a painter/printmaker based in Walcha in rural New South Wales, Australia. Since graduating from Sydney College of the Arts in 1982 she has exhibited her work in numerous solo and group shows in Sydney regional NSW and overseas.
"Many of my landscapes have been about moments when the elements of a place are caught in a sort of spotlight created by the drama of big weather or the afternoon and morning light.
When the forces of nature put on a show, it becomes a type of power play between man and nature creating a surreal and unsettling beauty.
In my landscape man is always present in the way he has delineated the natural contours with roads and fences. The roads assert themselves with signposts telling us where we are and where to go and the trucks travel those roads with a confidence borne from a sense of ownership. The process of painting has become a challenge to try to conjure up a type of truth that strikes a chord of recognition, of a moment that is both familiar and real.
More recently I have returned to painting interiors and multiple plate etchings. These spaces are also defined by the walls, doors and windows casting light and shadow. These shapes and reflections interest me." - Julia Griffin
