EXHIBITION 2 - 27 MARCH 2026
KERRY GULLIVER - ‘UNDERSTOREY’ & ANDREW PARKER - ‘SCRATCHED’ 50 YEARS IN CLAY
Weswal Gallery presents two artists, two mediums, one technique - sgraffito’.
‘Understorey’
Kerry Gulliver’s works are inspired by gardens and natural or wild landscapes, from which she selects elements to create mosaic like compositions. They have primarily cool climate and coastal themes, as she lives in the New England area and travels to the coast regularly.
“We are surrounded by an astounding variety of plants in a myriad of shapes,
colours and configurations, so there is endless subject matter. I have stylised
many of the plant forms and rearranged them in patterns so that they are
reminiscent of fabric designs and wallpapers.
The works are done in acrylic paint on board and paper. There is a strong
drawing element in the works, where I have created multi coloured line work
by scraping off the paint with a palette knife to reveal the ground colours
underneath, a technique called sgrafitto.”

‘Scratched’
50 Years in Clay
Andrew Parker began his clay career in 1976 in Kaeo, New Zealand. He has lived in Uralla since 1984.
Scratched – 50 Years in Clay brings together a new body of work, boldly decorated vases, platters, lamps and wall pieces—thrown and slab-built forms that act as expansive canvases for carved slip and colour. Through sgraffito, Andrew Parker explores abstracted imagery, marks, signals, microscopic views, mysterious mapping, playful communications from the subconscious. Bright, graphic and energetic, the works are offered not as fixed narratives, but as open invitations: for the artist to make, and for the viewer to make of them what they will.
Congratulations Andrew on 50 years in clay.
